National Puzzle Day
National Puzzle Day is celebrated on January 29th, and what better way to spend a cold winter day than by solving some fun and challenging puzzles with your family? Not only are puzzles a great form of entertainment, but they also help improve cognitive skills, problem-solving abilities, and can even strengthen relationships between family members.

  • Jigsaw Puzzles: Jigsaw puzzles are a classic favorite for families. You can choose from various themes such as landscapes, animals, or even famous landmarks. The best part about jigsaw puzzles is that they come in different levels of difficulty so everyone in the family can participate. Younger kids can work on simpler puzzles while older ones can tackle more complex ones.
  • Crossword Puzzles: Crossword puzzles are not only entertaining but also educational. They help improve vocabulary and spelling skills while being enjoyable at the same time. You can find crossword puzzle books specifically designed for kids or print out free ones online to solve as a family.
  • Scrabble: A classic word game that never goes out of style, Scrabble is perfect for family game nights. It's a great way to improve vocabulary and critical thinking skills while having fun with your loved ones.

National Backwards Day
National Backwards Day, also known as "Opposite Day," falls on January 31st every year. It is a playful day where people are encouraged to do things in reverse or opposite order.  For many, this holiday evokes childhood memories of pretending to walk backwards or saying everything in reverse.

The origins of National Backwards Day date back centuries ago when it was celebrated by ancient Celts as a way to ward off evil spirits during winter solstice. Today, National Backwards Day is observed in a more lighthearted manner but still holds an underlying message about embracing change and breaking out of our comfort zones. It encourages us to look at things from a new perspective and have fun while doing so. Try these ideas:

  • Walking Backwards: One of the simplest ways to celebrate National Backwards Day is by trying something as basic as walking backwards. This might sound easy, but it can actually be quite challenging at first! Start by taking small steps and gradually increase your speed. You can even make it a game by setting up an obstacle course or having a race with your family members.
  • Write Backwards: Challenge your writing skills by trying to write words or sentences backwards on paper using a mirror. This activity can be both entertaining and challenging, especially if you're competing against someone else.
  • Dessert First: Let go of all rules and indulge in dessert first! Who says you have to save sweets for last? Treat yourself and your family members by starting off your meals with dessert. It's a simple but enjoyable way to break away from routine.

National Hot Chocolate Day
National Hot Chocolate Day is all about indulging in a warm cup of cocoa on January 31 each year. This holiday has its roots in Mesoamerica where cacao beans were used for medicinal purposes by ancient Aztecs. Later on, Spanish explorers introduced hot chocolate as we know it today by adding sugar cane and spices like cinnamon and chili powder.

In modern times, it's a perfect excuse to gather around with loved ones under blankets or by the fireplace while sipping on this rich beverage. Aside from its delicious taste, hot chocolate has also been linked to numerous health benefits, including improved mood and reduced stress levels. It is also a great source of antioxidants and can help boost the immune system.

Hot chocolate is the ultimate comfort drink, especially on a chilly winter day. And what better way to celebrate National Hot Chocolate Day than by indulging in some delicious hot chocolate recipes? Not only will these recipes warm you up from the inside out, but they are also easy to make and can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Let’s start with a classic – a rich and creamy hot chocolate that will transport you back to your childhood. To make this recipe, you will need:

  • 2 cups of milk or milk substitute (I use almond milk)
  • 1/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk together the milk, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt until well combined. Once heated through, add in the vanilla extract and stir well. Serve in mugs topped with whipped cream or marshmallows for an extra decadent treat.

Hot chocolate is already pretty special on its own, but why not take it up a notch?

  • Substitute white or dark chocolate
  • Use fancy mugs or glassware for a more elevated experience.
  • Add toppings like whipped cream, marshmallows, sprinkles, or shaved chocolate.
  • Experiment by adding in flavored syrups such as peppermint, caramel or hazelnut.

Groundhog Day
On February 2nd, a cute little groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil predicts the weather on Groundhog Day.  The furry forecaster emerges from its burrow on this day.

Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow 9 out of 10 times during the spring season, but these predictions aren’t usually taken seriously, but it’s still a way to honor cultural traditions. In addition to adding a touch of magic to the transition from winter to spring, it's a fun tradition.

You can get into the spirit of this day by watching the classic film "Groundhog Day". This comedy tells the story of a weatherman who finds himself living the same day over and over again. Family members are sure to laugh together in this heartwarming and funny movie.

Which Day Will You Celebrate??
National Puzzle Day, National Backwards Day, National Hot Chocolate Day and Groundhog Day may seem like silly holidays on the surface, but they hold significant cultural and historical significance. So why not gather around the table with some hot chocolate, inside out sweaters and celebrate these fun holidays together? These celebrations remind us to embrace change, have fun with our loved ones, and appreciate the little things in life. So mark your calendars and celebrate these unique holidays with your family!
